In our previous article on how to save money for traveling we explored some initial ways of getting insight into your travel costs and 5 great money saving tips. In this article we provide 5 additional tips on how to be frugal and save money in preparation for your travels.
Money Saving tip nr 6: Good gear vs expensive gear While preparing your trip you will soon come to the conclusion that travel gear is quite expensive. Since there are a lot of awesome and handy travel goodies out there you’ll see that this will take quite a bite out of your travel budget. So ask yourself the question “do I really need this stuff” and if the answer is yes ask yourself “do I need to have the best of the best or does a cheaper version satisfy my needs.” As an example, if you are traveling for a month do you really need a €300 backpack, or would a €100 do the trick?
Money Saving tip nr 7: Buy travel products in the country that you are visiting Note that some travel products may be a lot cheaper in the country that you are visiting than back home. Do some research and consider buying some products during your trip rather than at home.
Money Saving tip nr 8: Minimize your fixed costs at home during the time that you’re away
Nothing can be more killing for your travel budget than the rent or mortgage of your empty apartment back home eating a chunk out of your savings every month. Therefore try your best to rent your apartment. Also try to save on others fixed costs like insurance, your phone bill, magazines, internet and TV costs, etc.
Money Saving tip nr 9: Make sure that you have a bank account from which you can get cash at low costs Some banks charge a lot of money for cash withdrawals abroad. This could be as much as €10 per withdrawal. Since you will be doing quite some withdrawals during your travels a good way to save money on traveling is to get a bank account with low costs for international withdrawals.
Money Saving tip nr 10: Travel Slowly Most people have very ambitious travel plans, including as many countries or even continents as possible, covering huge pieces of land and mileage. And of course this is understandable. Everybody tries to get the maximum out of his trip. But consider this; The faster you travel the more money you will actually spend. All that mileage will translate itself into flight tickets, and costs for overland travel. Some countries are really diverse so you may consider exploring less countries, but more in depth instead of racing through them. In fact for some people this is more enjoyable as well. Obviously this is just a consideration. Some people prefer to travel slow, others like to go fast. Just take into account that traveling fast does have an impact on your budget.
