Travel Route: South Island Nature and Adventure in 3 weeksStart: Picton End: Christchurch This route is a South Island route that you can combine with a visit to the North Island Island. To complete this route, you will need about 3 weeks; it will take you passed some of the most spectacular scenery on the South Island and includes various hikes. If you have more time, you can always add more routes to your itinerary. The trip starts in Picton, a small seaside town from where you can drive to the Golden Bay area. If you’re serious about hiking, you can easily spend 3 days in the Abel Tasman National Park, after which you can visit Farewell Spit and, if you still haven’t hiked enough, walk the Heaphy Track. Head south to the West Coast. Here is where the real spectacular landscapes begin. You can spot seals at Cape Foulwind, sea strange rock formations at Punakaiki and hike a glacier at Fox or Franz Josef Glacier. Heading further south, you should make a stop at the Queenstown, the adventure capital of New Zealand to get the adrenaline pumping. After which you make your way to Wanaka. Further South you can use the small lakeside town of Te Anau to explore Milford Sound, the amazing fiords of the South Island. Again, this area is famous for its many walking tracks. Get ready to travel back up North, passing through Queenstown again, to make your way to Mt Cook, on of the most majestic mountains of New Zealand. Here you can explore more glaciers. Finally, make your way West, passing the small town of Tekapo, to end your route in Christchurch. Keep in mind that the West Coast can be very rainy, so take your raincoat with you. In winter, road conditions might be dangerous due to snow or ice. Check ou weather conditions before you set off. |
