WEST COAST - GENERAL IMPRESSION
Travelling down the West Coast of New Zealand is a dream come true. Rainforest, glaciers, stunning mountains and lakes form the backdrop for a great ride along the coast. There are plenty of things to see and do on the West Coast, so take your time to explore. The three main towns are Westport, Greymouth and Hokitika (for if you need gasoline, food etc.). The coast is famous for its greenstone and former goldmines. In Holitika you can see some fine examples of greenstone carving and the town it famous for its Wildfoods Festival, held in March (you can try huhu grubs....!). These towns make for a good overnight stop, but keep in mind that the real star of the West Coast is Mother Nature!
The Weat Coast can be quite rainy, so take a good waterproof jacket with you.
