Cobán
Cobán is where all roads from the south come together to continue into one road which continues up north. And actually, that is all there is to say for this town. There really not much special to do here. But… if you like coffee, this is the right place to go. With so many travelers passing through here, half of the town consists of hotels, restaurants and bars. And in these bars, the real Guatemalan coffee is poured. Coming from the rainforest near Cobán where it rains all year round, the coffee is characterized by its fruity taste and is appreciated worldwide. In Cobán itself it is cheaper to get your cup filled then anywhere else in the world so enjoy it while you can.
Another great thing you can do here, next to drinking, is eating! On the West side of the central plaza, you will find hotel and restaurant “La Posada”. They serve delicious food for approximately 35 Quetzales. Being a hotel too, you might as well, role straight upstairs after dinner and crash in a comfortable bed. However, act wisely and bring some earplugs since Cobán is one of the noisiest towns you will ever visit. Barking dogs, broken down cars and crowing roosters will not make it easy to sleep. And as you will probably travel further rather fast, it is important to have a good night sleep.
