Lago Atitlán (Lake Atitlán)
According to some, this lake is more beautiful than Lake Como in Italy. Although this is debatable, it is a fact that this Lago Atitlán is truly extraordinary. When standing at the edge of the lake – and only when it is not so misty as it regularly is – the big mountains and classic shaped volcanoes surrounding the lake make you feel as small as Tom Thumb. In fact Lago Atitlan is the remains of a collapsed volcanic crater and with 320 meters is the deepest lake in Central America. It’s really beautiful here. In Mayan language the word ‘Atitlán’ means ‘the place where the rainbow gets its color’
There are about a dozen small villages surrounding the lake and you could easily spend days exploring this area, although some people with tight travel schemes take 2 or 3 days.
