Porto Seguro is one of the most beautiful and most popular holiday destinations of Brazil. This is actually the very place where Brazil was discovered for the first time by the Portuguese. It is quite a large beach town and is situated next to Arraial d Ajuda. The two towns are separated by a river. You can travel between the two towns by bus/ferry (one way +-1 Euro). Although local tourism is mostly focused on Porto Seguro most foreign travelers stay in more laid back Arraial d Ajuda.
Porto Seguro is bigger and busier than Arraial d Ajuda. The town consists of an upper town and lower town. The upper town includes the historical center with a lot of colonial architecture. The lower town has the coast and the bank of the Buranhem river.
The Passarela do Alcool (Alcohol Street) is the street where all the action takes place at night. At the end of the day many people go to the market of Porto Seguro that starts around 5. Here you can buy food and get drinks. There are spectacular beach parties almost every night with a lot of Brazilian music. These parties are visited by thousands of people. On those nights the beach transforms into a big open air disco. Every beach pavilion has its own weekly beach party. Sometimes these parties start in the afternoon. Porto Seguro also boasts a vibrant Carnival.
