Salvador da Bahia is the capital of the state Bahia and it is the heart of Brazils African heritage. People usually refer to the city as Salvador, but sometimes the old name Bahia is used as well. Salvadors history has been heavily influenced by the great amounts of slaves that were brought to Brazil from Africa to work in the many sugar farms and sugar mills that surrounded the city. The city s population mainly consists of decedents of the former African slaves.

The climate is pleasant, the breeze is soothing. As Salvador is right on the ocean there are plenty of beaches to spend your afternoon. When in Salvador take some time to explore Pelourinho, the historical part of the city which is full of Portuguese colonial architecture. Besides the many colonial churches and buildings, a peculiar sight in Salvador is the Art Deco elevator which brings you up and down from Cidade Baixa (lower town) to Cidade Alta, the upper side of town. The more modern neighborhood Barra boasts some good nightlife. Take about 2 or 3 days to discover the beauty of this city.

While in Salvador look out for the many drum corps and capoeira artists which are seen regularly throughout the city. The city is home to some of Brazils most famous artists such as Olodum, Daniela Mercury, Timbalada, Margareth Menezes, and Ivete sangalo. If possible try to catch a performance of one of these magnificent artists. If you are in to it this is probably the best place on earth to take some percussion lessons or to buy percussion instruments.
