CUZCO

The Andean city of Cuzco is the gateway to Machu Picchu. Travellers from all over the world come here to organize the unforgettable trip to Machu Picchu. But there is much more to Cuzco than a serious line up of Machu Picchu /Inca Trail tour operators.

Allegedly Cuzco served as the capital of the Inca empire already in the 12th century. The Inca remains are visible throughout the city although most of the original temples have been replaced by the Spanish Conquistadors. You will see that the beautiful colonial buildings that were put in place were built on the original and massive Inca foundations which were left in place. Good examples are la Catedral, La Compañía Church and Museo Inka. Besides, you’ll see Inca walls throughout the city.

There are some impressive Inca sites in the near vicinity of Cuzco like Sacsayhuamán, Tambo Machay or Inca Pisac which are also highly recommended. Mentioning this it needs to be said that the area around Cuzco itself is awesome so a daytrip is definitely recommended. A great way to see some of the surroundings is to rent mountain bikes and head for one or more of the Inca sites.

For those who looking for a good party it’s probably good to hear that Cuzco boasts some of the best nightlife in Peru.

Note: As Cuzco is situated at 3325 meters altitude make sure to acclimatize in Cuzco for a couple of days. Take it easy for the first couple of days and avoid any strenuous activities. Instead, check the beautiful churches, museums and Inca sites and arrange your trip to Machu Picchu if you haven’t already.
