Probably the most spectacular adventure in Venezuela is a visit to Angel Falls (Salto Angel), which with 979 meters (3211 feet) are the highest waterfalls in the world.

The Angel Falls are remotely located deep in the jungles of the Amazone. In fact, this is a magnificent area filled with tepuis, ancient table top mountains. The Angel Falls drop of a tepui called Auyantepui. The falls thank their name to Jimmy Angel, a US aviater who discovered the falls in 1937.

Given its remote location, the Angels Falls can only be reached by a Cessna flight over the spectacular Venezuelan jungle and tepui landscape to the beautiful waterfalls at Canaima. From there it’s another few hours by curiara (a long Indian canoe) to the falls, a shaky upstream boat ride along some unforgetable tepui landscapes. Finally, it takes around an hour hike to get to the very bottom of the falls, where you can bathe in its water. It’s a long and adventurous trip, but the way there is spectacular and rewarding. All together a visit to the Angel Falls is a once in a lifetime experience.

Most people organise their trip from Ciudad Bolivar, the main access point to the Angel Falls experience. See "Trip details" for more details. The trip isn’t cheap (around $250), but definitely worth it!

A true highlight of Venezuela and Latin America in general.
