The Catatumbo Lake is home to a daily display of one of nature’s most spectacular natural phenomenon… “lightning.” Given its unique location the Maracaibo Lake gets struck by spectacular displays of lightning nearly every day of the year. The funny thing however is the fact that the lightning comes with no sound. Nothing… Bizarre!
It is possible to organize a trip from Mérida, which takes 2 days. The trip to get there goes straight accross the Andes and is an adventure by itself. This spectacular ride takes several hours and provides you with mighty views on the way. Finally, once you reach the lake you need to embark on small boats and after a short boat ride, you spend the night on a house which is built on stilts on the lake. As the night falls the lightning spectacle starts at the horizon. Fantastic!!
