Los Llanos are the vast wetlands in south-western Venezuela. Here you can experience the Venezuelan cowboy life from up close. It is possible to organize a trip from Mérida and stay at a ranch. You could visit independently, but Los Llanos really is a very very remote place and you’ll have a very hard time arranging your transport to a particular ranch. And you probably won’t be off any cheaper, so it’s better stick with an organized tour from Mérida. From the ranch you can do various safari trips to see alligators, capibaras, go horseback riding, catch and eat piraña’s (a fun hard catch, but delicious), go on a canoe trips where you can see a great variety of birds, pink dolphins, and if you’re lucky spot an Anaconda!
Some travel agencies in Mérida offer a combined tour which includes an amazing rafting trip in Barinas. The scenery here is incredible. One of the best rafting trips around. So always ask if it’s possible to combine the Llanos tour with rafting on the way back.
